Google Targets ‘Scraped’ Content and ‘Content Farms’

google content farmIn a move “to encourage a healthy web ecosystem,” Google recently announced a major change to its search algorithm – a move to devalue so-called “content farms” that primarily copy content from other websites, and sites that offer little or no value-added content for users.

The move ensures the continuance of the Internet adage, “Content is King!” According to Google, its algorithm tweak “noticeably” impacted 11.8% of its search queries, dropping the search engine results page (SERP) rankings of sites that “copy content from other sites or sites that are just not very useful,” while providing better SERP rankings for “sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.”

Affiliate Nexus Tax Coming to Arizona and Minneapolis

amazon taxIf you are an affiliate located in Arizona or Minnesota, then beware the online taxman!

Both states are considering adoption of the Affiliate Nexus Tax. Basically, the law says if an online retailer has affiliate marketers in the state, then the retailer is responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax. As a result, if the law is passed, hundreds of merchants may decide to terminate their relationship with you.

Problems with Affiliate Nexus Tax

Bills of this ilk are often mistakenly informally referred to as “The Amazon Tax” or “Internet Tax.” But these names are misleading because the tax, which is complex and takes on many different forms, singles out just one group within the online advertising space:  affiliates.
